| Abstract (dc.description.abstract) | The aim of this dissertation was to analyze the role of beliefs about intimate partner violence in the occurrence of violence and its impacts on mental health. This dissertation is composed of three empirical articles. The first qualitative and exploratory study aimed to investigate beliefs about intimate partner violence through a focus group. The results revealed three central axes of beliefs: 1) the influence of culture, gender, and masculinity on the acceptance of violence; 2) transgenerationality and the naturalization of violence; and 3) justifications for the occurrence of violence. The second quantitative study aimed to identify the level of agreement with these beliefs, compare the perspectives of men and women, and verify which sociodemographic characteristics could predict higher levels of agreement with the beliefs. The results showed low levels of agreement with beliefs legitimizing violence, but men presented higher levels of agreement with these beliefs than women (p<0.05). The third study, of a correlational nature, sought to analyze the level of agreement with the beliefs and verify possible associations with perpetration and victimization in relationships and their impact on mental health. The results showed low levels of agreement with the beliefs, but high rates of violence and an association between the occurrence of intimate partner violence and mental illness. | Resumo (dc.description.resumo) | O objetivo dessa tese foi analisar o papel das crenças sobre violência conjugal na ocorrência da violência e seus impactos na saúde mental. Esta tese é composta por três artigos empíricos. O primeiro, qualitativo e exploratório, teve por objetivo investigar as crenças sobre violência conjugal por meio de um grupo focal. Os resultados revelaram três eixos centrais de crenças: 1) influência da cultura, do gênero e da masculinidade na aceitação da violência; 2) transgeracionalidade e a naturalização da violência e 3) justificativas para a ocorrência da violência. O segundo estudo, quantitativo, teve por objetivo identificar o nível de concordância com as crenças, comparar a perspectiva de homens e mulheres e verificar que características sociodemográficas podem ser preditivas de maior concordância com as crenças. Os resultados evidenciaram baixos níveis de concordância com as crenças legitimadoras de violência, mas os homens apresentaram maiores níveis de concordância com as crenças do que as mulheres (p<0,05). O terceiro estudo, de caráter correlacional, buscou analisar o nível de concordância com as crenças e verificar possíveis associações com a perpetração e vitimização nos relacionamentos e seus agravos à saúde mental. Os resultados evidenciaram baixos níveis de concordância com as crenças, mas altos índices de violência e associação entre a ocorrência da violência conjugal e adoecimento mental. Os achados da tese revelam um cenário inicial de transformação nas crenças sobre violência, que ainda parece não se refletir na mudança do comportamento violento na conjugalidade. | pt_BR |
