Suris, Andreia
This research aims to investigate the witchcraft practices (healing, divination, and love enchantments) involving women in 18th century Grão-Pará. It examines whether these practices can be understood as forms of resistance and subversion against the normative and patriarchal social order in which these women lived. The primary historical source used is the "Livro de Denunciações e Confissões” from the last visitation of the Court of the Inquisition in Portuguese America, which took place in the Grão-Pará captaincy (1763-1769), focusing on the denunciations and confessions of magical-religious practices. Additionally, the research includes two case studies that stood out: Sabina, an indigenous woman, and Luduvina Ferreira, two renowned healers in Pará society at the time of the visitation, both of whom were prosecuted by the Portuguese Inquisition.

<title>Militante pioneiro?: As relações políticas de um impresso regional - Caxias do Sul - RS (1948-1954)</title>

<description>Militante pioneiro?: As relações políticas de um impresso regional - Caxias do Sul - RS (1948-1954)
Porto, Erick da Silva
The research presented here analyzes the newspaper "O Pioneiro," which began its circulation in Caxias do Sul – RS in 1948 and continues to operate to the present day. We employ discursive analysis to examine the periodical and its political relationships, focusing on the involvement of Integralist agents and the ideology of this movement between the years 1948 and 1954. Integralism was a political organization with national dimensions but deeply rooted in some states of the country. It is essential to pay attention to regional levels to comprehend the complexity of the largest fascist movement organized outside of Europe. Additionally, it is crucial to understand how Integralism attempted to adapt to the new national context from 1945 onwards, seeking to modify some of its discourses and modes of action. Understanding how this organization, closely linked to movements that had been defeated in World War II, remained active will provide new insights into the changes and continuities in the Brazilian political scene from the late 1940s to the early 1950s. The proposal to analyze a media outlet and its interactions with politics allows for reflection on how, at different times, national far-right movements used the press to stay active, disseminating their ideas and principles in a considered democratic political context. Were it not for the transformations Brazil underwent in the 1940s and 1950s and its nascent democracy, newspapers like "O Pioneiro" would likely have faced censorship imposed by Vargas in previous years. Thus, through the discourse employed by a newspaper, we aim to deepen the understanding of the political history of Caxias do Sul and the surrounding region.

<title>In the wonderland of Peru: Machu Picchu nas páginas da revista National Geographic</title>
<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/13010</link>
<description>In the wonderland of Peru: Machu Picchu nas páginas da revista National Geographic
Colombo, Micaela
The National Geographic magazine, founded in 1888, had the objective, throughout the 20th century, of making articles that would promote places and cultures considered different and exotic. Latin America, in this sense, was considered a vast camp for exploration. We propose here that the magazine, through funding recognition and exploration trips to the subcontinent, fed a north-american government political vector which, once the Spanish-American War (1898) ended, started a new phase in its relationships with Latin America. In this sense, this research’s purpose is to, through articles published in three editions of National Geographic (1913, 1915 and 1916) regarding the expeditions headed by Hiram Bingham to Machu Picchu, analyze the way in which Peru and its society are presented in the magazine. Despite the texts in the articles, as well as Bingham’s trip reports (1911 and 2010), being equally suitable for examination, we will be giving special attention to the almost 300 photographs that accompanied the articles. Since the 19th century the magazine would use photographs to illustrate its articles and try to capture the reader’s interest. Photography was seen as neutral and impartial, a producer of objective data about reality, which inferred more reliability to its content. From the “event” of Machu Picchu’s discovery on, we intend to show that, beyond mere illustration, the photographs in two of the previously mentioned editions of the magazine represented the way in which Latin America and, more specifically, Peru were seen and represented.

Bortolanza, Karina
A widowed Italian peasant, 47 years old, mother of seven with no future in Italy, emigrates to an uncertain destination in Brazil. On Brazilian soil, she raises her children, starts her own business (a inn for muleteers in Caxias do Sul), and puts her health-related knowledge into practice, becoming a midwife. The research aims to understand the female role in the Italian immigration colonies in Rio Grande do Sul through the figure of Anna Maria Pauletti Rech, who arrived in 1876. The focus is on the places of action for women, especially widows, divorced, or single, those without a male figure as the head of the family. The methodology involves trajectory studies, emphasizing female protagonism and their relationships with the social context. By cross-referencing sources such as periodicals, baptismal books, documents from the Municipal Chamber of Caxias do Sul, and interviews, we will seek a better understanding of the character's relationships with the contemporary context. Following the case of immigrant Anna Rech will also allow us to understand the different representations created to emphasize the positive role of the female immigrant. Anna Rech had a statue erected during the celebrations of the Centennial of Italian Immigration in Rio Grande do Sul in the 1970s, aiming to exalt the figure of the immigrant woman as a mother and hardworking individual who left her place of origin to succeed in Brazilian lands. Finally, we emphasize the importance of this study in aiding the understanding of the female universe in the society formed by immigrants in Rio Grande do Sul.

Troian, Eduarda
This Masters’ Degree Dissertation proposes to analyze the book Treaty on Physical Education for Boys for use by the Portuguese Nation from 1790, written by Francisco de Mello Franco, Portuguese-Brazilian doctor, considering its objective of contributing to the children’s health in the seven hundred’s Portugal, especially concerning the health of children from the male gender. Therefore, we seek to analyze this medicine’s work which, by the influence of the enlightenment movement current in the Portuguese society from the second half of the 18th century, dialogued with the pedagogical proposals which contributed to the children’s development. This book, which characterizes by focusing on the care demanded by the children from the 18th century, had as objective to reach the Portuguese families, especially mothers, for whom the author directed some of his advertences. This way, the book would have been one of the first to approach specific care for the raising and education of healthy boys on the Portugal’s kingdom. Over its 12 chapters, the author approaches the development of the child, contemplating form cares to be observed during pregnancy to the practice of physical exercises. Among the cares, stand out those related to the child’s food, highlighting its importance to the constitution of healthier individuals. To meet the proposed objectives, we work with a bibliographical and a theoretical framework that cover different areas of the History discipline, especially the History of Medicine, Health and Diseases, History of Food, Education and the Social History of Childhood.

Baldasso, Camille Chies
This paper is the result of a documentary research with rare and unpublished sources produced by members of the Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito de Pretos e Pardos de São Leopoldo. From the Compromisso and the Livros de Atas of this Brotherhood, a micro-historiographical analysis was developed to understand how this space of sociability, agency, negotiations and conflicts was built and maintained. Through the daily life fragments of the devotees of the Rosary, it was possible to think about the interdependencies and interethnic relations between enslaved and egressed captives with their masters, deepening the black presence in a European immigration zone and contributing to the construction of a more racialized and diverse history of Vale do Rio dos Sinos and Rio Grande do Sul as a whole. Through the bias of devotion and black associations, we approach the enslaved, free and freed black population of São Leopoldo in the 19th century as characters in their own stories and actively engaging in the society in which they were inserted. Not as wounded or passive victims of the injustices they have faced, but as human beings. Complex, plural and dynamic people who revolted, organized themselves, had choices and possibilities.

<title>Idéias, reflexões e sonhos: Paulo Schilling, um jornalista engajado (1950-1964)</title>
<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/12782</link>
<description>Idéias, reflexões e sonhos: Paulo Schilling, um jornalista engajado (1950-1964)
Santos, Bruna dos
The objective of this work is to trace the intellectual trajectory of the journalist and activist Paulo Schilling from 1950 to 1964. We used his collection in which he worked all his life, until his death in 2012, and left us as a record of his trajectory as left-wing militant of rural workers. Historian Diego Scherer da Silva was able to organize his material so that the entire community could access it, and he brought it to the Nucleus for Research in History at UFRGS, where we were able to analyze and discuss his main ideas. The main themes of this research are guided by the findings in its collection. Bearing in mind that Paulo Schilling addressed several topics during his career, we chose to highlight the agrarian sector, nationalism, the International Wheat Agreement and cooperativism. We chose these because we consider them necessary for the current economic and social scenario. For that, we used the books and manuscripts written by Paulo Schilling. The Hemeroteca Nacional also served us as a source, where publications by the journalist in print media can be found, as well as publications by other authors in which his name is cited as a reference in the themes worked on here. In this way, this research influenced us and reflects the agrarian context of Rio Grande do Sul at the time, the problems and solutions found by Schilling that ranged from the modernization of the agrarian sector to the social inequalities of rural workers and the poor distribution of land. Among the solutions that Schilling brings us is cooperativism, agrarian reform and taxation of landowners. The analysis of its collection allowed us to discuss current problems bringing the point of view of a specialist in the agrarian field and allowing us to expand the possibilities for the sector.

Soares, Matheus Alves
The present master's research involves the discussion of the idea of the working class and the black movement and how these causes were related to each other, in the context of the city of Pelotas in the post Estado Novo period. The focus of the study is on the newspaper A Alvorada, a weekly periodical of black and labor causes, which circulated in Pelotas between 1907 and 1965, restricting it to the period 1945-57, trying to observe how this newspaper was included in this discussion, and to what extent it was limited by context. The choice of this time delimitation for the research is due to the fact that 1945 was the year of the end of the Estado Novo, which marked great changes in the labor field, and ending in 1957 because we believe that this way we formed a sufficiently skillful time for the study. Thus, thinking about the concept of the labor movement in the post-slavery period, we will discuss the movement of the black working class under the debate called by Sidney Chalhoub the “historiographical Berlin wall”, the unbridgeable division between post-slavery and labor studies, summarized by the absence of consideration of color within analyzes of the working class. Also thinking about the anti-colonialist discussions that took place outside Brazil – mainly in the French colonies – contemporaneously with the period studied, we intend to observe to what extent the discourses of anti-colonialist theorists and revolutionaries can approach the claims made explicit in A Alvorada, and how we can discuss the concept of colonialist ideology in already republican Brazil.

<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/12647</link>
Rodrigues, Carolina Wendling
The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the use that Italian immigrants made of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre, the conditions under which they sought medical care, the diseases they presented, and how access to this institution was granted between 1875 and 1890. The Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre, founded in 1803, witnessed various historical phases of Rio Grande do Sul, including the growth of the city of Porto Alegre. In the midst of this process, we highlight the arrival of Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. The records of patients at the Santa Casa in the 1870s reveal the presence of newly arrived Italians in the province seeking this charitable institution. In the following decades, Italians continued to turn to it. Our hypothesis asserts that the profile of these immigrants and the diseases of the newly arrived individuals changed over the years. To address these questions, we used the General Enrollment Book of Patients at the Santa Casa as a source to understand the paths taken by these immigrants and how the government dealt with health and assistance issues for them.&#13;
Additionally, we consulted sources such as reports from the president of the province, official letters, and correspondence issued by various agencies, such as the General Inspectorate of Lands and Colonization. Based on the survey of these sources, drawing inspiration from Italian microhistory, we employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. We observed that with the increase in migratory flows, the Brazilian Empire intensified sanitary inspection throughout the country, providing places to receive and isolate immigrants, such as hostels, maritime hospitals, and lazarettos. In the province of Rio Grande do Sul, some of these locations operated temporarily. As a result, the Santa Casa received payments from the provincial government to treat the immigrants' illnesses and provide accommodation for them. In this sense, we found that the institution was used by both sick and non-sick immigrants, revealing different purposes for those who lacked resources to cover treatment or lodging expenses.

Lazzarotto, Arthur Romanzini
The present work approaches the contemporary gastronomy of Rio Grande do Sul, presenting the perspective between tradition and innovation as a field of problematization. To achieve its objective, the first chapter reviews the history of gastronomy, with the purpose of understanding its formation in contemporary times. The following chapters seek through bibliographical and documental research, using among others the Destemperados supplement of the newspaper Zero Hora, to address the gastronomic manifestations in Rio Grande do Sul. Modernist Cuisine, New Nordic Cuisine and themes such as terroir, sustainability, Slow Food and localism are used as analysis guides. The thesis proposes the verification of a Southern Gastronomy which would distance itself from the inspiration of the local cuisine, from the gaucho traditionalism and from the aesthetics commonly used by the contemporary gastronomy of the State. Southern Gastronomy would seek a strong localism, using the local environment, seasonality, a modernist aesthetic and a memory not based on traditionalism and the usual representations of the gaucho as inspiration. More specifically, the aim is to understand how cuisine, tradition and regional significance have been re-signified by restaurants and gastronomy agents, such as chefs and cheffes.

<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/12059</link>
Klein, Paulo Eduardo Fasolo
This research aims to understand how Correio do Povo, the main newspaper in Rio&#13;
Grande do Sul, acted in the 1963 referendum. Such vote meant the end of the republican&#13;
parliamentary period in the country after its adoption in 1961. The Jânio Quadros&#13;
renouce as president put Brazil in a political crisis since his vice president, João Goulart&#13;
was prevented to take office by the military ministers. To avoid a civil war, the National&#13;
Congress established the parliamentarism, in which the presidential powers are smaller.&#13;
The Additional Act that changed the system of government provided a vote to&#13;
population decide between parliamentarism and presidentialism and after political&#13;
articulations, the referendum was advanced to 1963. Focusing on the acting of defenders&#13;
of the cabinet regime, this work used the press as source and adopted the specific&#13;
methodological care. Having Pierre Bourdie as theorist, we intend to fill in some gaps in&#13;
the historiography of the period.

<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/12056</link>
The present study aims to analyze the Constituent of the State of Rio Grande do Sul of 1947, which in the enacted version instituted the parliamentary system of government in the state. For this purpose, a set of historical sources organized using the content analysis method was used in the research. As main sources, the Annals of the Constituent Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul and the newspaper Correio do Povo (RS) were used. The publications of the Diário da Câmara dos Deputados, the Annals of the Federal Senate and the newspapers O Estado de S. Paulo (SP) and O Globo (RJ) were also used. On the other hand, party-political issues developed in the Constituent Assembly process were analyzed from the theoretical perspective of Pierre Bourdieu, based on concepts such as habitus, political field, symbolic power, political discourse and political alliance, as well as the notions of forces ideas (parliamentary and presidentialism) and in the interplay of oppositions and distinctions. between agents and political parties in the field. Thus, from Bourdieu's theory, we tried to understand the establishment of political alliances during the constitutional process of Rio Grande do Sul, with emphasis on the political alliance between PTB and PL and on the game of oppositions between the parties in the political field of the Assembly.

The present work is a research about the speech formulated in the Cabildo of Buenos Aires about the indigenous populations of the pampa of Buenos Aires, in the period from 1753 to 1776. The Cabildos were colonial institutions that had the role of supervising and giving progress to various issues local, legal, administrative, economic, political and social. The Cabildo of Buenos Aires produced minutes that summarized its meetings and which, during the republican period, were compiled and published under the title Colección Acuerdos del Extinguido Cabildo de Buenos Aires. One of the recurring themes in the Acuerdos is the “problem” that independent indigenous groups, in the mid-18th century, showed to be for the “elites”, the Buenos Aires social groups represented in the Cabildo de Buenos Aires. Thus, through the analysis of the Acuerdos, this research seeks to understand the interethnic relations in the “frontier”, or contact zone, the actions and speeches carried out by the cabildantes in the face of the challenges imposed by indigenous groups. The analysis is based on the understanding that the discourse reflects the dynamics of the relationships that occurred in this historical process, being a phenomenon of transculturation in the contact zone (PRATT, 1999), and it is also about the construction of alterity in front of the indigenous considered as “barbarian” (CERTEAU, 2000; HARTOG, 1999; TODOROV, 1993; 2019). This dissertation also intends to reflect on the implications of the archiving process of the sources used here. The Colección Acuerdos del Cabildo de Buenos, which I had access to build this research, was organized and published by the Archivo General de la Nación, in the 19th century.

Wons, Ketlin Quinhones
This research analyzed the photographic collection of the Dr. Sezefredo Azambuja Vieira Historical Archive, located in Canoas/RS, from an ethnographic point of view, seeking to reflect on the performance of both city residents and employees of the institution in the constitution of the aforementioned collection. The research analyzed several actions carried out by the Canoas society, gathering different documents and promoting photographic exhibitions about the city's history and other cultural activities. When verifying the popular demands, I found that since 1970, the community required the creation of the Historical Archive, with the municipal government creating the institution only in 1985 and its inauguration occurring only in 1989. In this sense, the research analyzed which strategies, interests and narratives legitimized the creation of the Historical Archive; the process of constitution and organization of the photographic collection and the use of photographs as memorial representations of the city. Furthermore, it contributes to denaturalize the idea that the sole purpose of archives like this is to serve as a repository of local memory, but also to encourage research in its collections to think about the city or other themes. When describing the strategies of the Community of Canoas in having the memories of the city preserved in the Historical Archive, I use an ethnographic narrative approach, with bibliographic research, consulting local newspapers, official documents, oral interviews, in addition to the source I consider essential, which is the photographic collection that lies in this institution. Thus, I verified that the arrangements for the constitution of this photographic collection aimed to project a legacy for future generations, through the search for recognition and the establishment of an image of oneself, based on heritage preservation. Therefore, this research aimed to deepen the study of the importance of the role of civil society in public policies aimed at the promotion and conservation of cultural assets, as well as encouraging research from archival collections in the area of history, human sciences and others.

Pacheco, Henrique Melati
This text presents the result of a historical investigation done with manuscripts and other separate documentation, which currently is part of the “brotherhood collection”, a documental section of the Municipal Historical Archive of Cachoeira do Sul (AHMCS). The project is a result of the lack of historical studies, focused on specific locations and periods, interested in investigations about catolic brotherhoods in a relational perspective, covering brotherhoods of local elites, as well as black brotherhoods. The idea of a social relationality gave unity to research and narrative, which, through the analyticity of race, sex and class relations, attempt to reconstitute social reality. The project was mobilized by the following question: why do just black brotherhoods have color, in documents and in historiography? As results, we reflect on the absence of color (or the presence of racialized identities) in the historical documents produced by the catolics brotherhoods of Cachoeira (do Sul – RS, 19th century), and also on the narcissistic pacts of Brazilian academic historiographical whiteness, which hardly put whiteness in question in their works. Contributing to the approximation of the social history of catolic brotherhoods to post-colonial studies, to field of post-abolition and critical whiteness studies.

<title>O clero paroquial de Rio Grande, Rio Pardo e Santo Amaro no século XVIII : composição, reprodução e trajetórias</title>
<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/11362</link>
<description>O clero paroquial de Rio Grande, Rio Pardo e Santo Amaro no século XVIII : composição, reprodução e trajetórias
Casagrande, Rafaela Zanotto
This work has as its object the parish priests in Rio Grande de São Pedro in the 18th century and seeks to analyze processes and operations that characterized the composition and reproduction of this group. In order to identify “who” made up the parish clergy and “why” these individuals were appointed parish priests, we investigated a group of twenty-nine (29) priests who were appointed to the parishes of São Pedro do Rio Grande, Nossa Senhora do Rosário do Rio Pardo and Santo Amaro, between 1738 and 1801. To meet the proposed objectives, we carried out an onomastic search in sources of different types and located in different collections, among which are legal-administrative documents of ecclesiastical and secular origin, and central and local instances. We defined, first, the biographical profile of these subjects, using the prosopography method, in order to, in continuity, identify and discuss the various instances - family, individual, local and central power, religious and secular power and legislation - that marked the trajectory of individuals until the moment they assumed the role of parish priest in Rio Grande de São Pedro. Finally, we pursued the name of some of these individuals, so that, through the analysis of their trajectories, we could uncover other realities and practices and justify and/or contest the trends found for the parish priests profile. This investigation, therefore, adopts the variation in scales of observation, combining a prosopography study with case studies, aiming at a more balanced analysis between trends, social and cultural structures and normative systems, revealed by macro-observation, and wills, intentions and projects of individual and/or family action, which emerge from microscopic observation. Therefore, it is a work that is theoretically based on Social History, in dialogue with the micro-historical methodology, activating concepts such as biographies and trajectories; social relationships; composition and reproduction of groups; individuals and structures. The identification and discussion of the profile of the parish priests assigned to work in the three parishes of Rio Grande de São Pedro, through the use of the variation of scales, allowed to unveil new social practices and aspects of the interrelation between individuals and institutions - State and Church -, above all attributing a greater action – evidenced in the strategies, negotiations, decisions and confrontations – to the social actors in the period in which the metropolitan power and the Church were consolidated in the southern end of Portuguese America.

Bastos Neto, Ernesto Pereira
The present study is an investigation of military recruitment and the formation of military leaderships in the 19th century Rio Grande do Sul. Inspired by Italian micro-history, the scale of observation was reduced, selecting the life of a character as the guiding thread of the research. In the beginning of the 19th century, Antonio Joze de Mello Brabo migrated from a village in the backlands of São Paulo to the south and, over the course of a few decades, became one of the main military commanders settled in the plateau of Rio Grande do Sul . The research aims to understand which social conditions and strategies made this trajectory possible. Although he commanded battalions in successive wars, from Cisplatina (1825-1828) to the war against Paraguay (1864-1870) - which earned him honorary decorations and honorary patents - , the trajectory of Antonio Joze de Mello Brabo does not reveal the performance of a rich man of fields and cattle, but a very heterogeneous biography, marked by an economic life no more than average and a very discrete, if not insignificant, political action. The nodal points of his military recruitment capacity seem to be found both in an efficient military performance and in his relational capital, particularly in an ability to negotiate with various local sectors of the society in which he was inserted, in the southern Rio Grande plateau.

This research has as its main objective to analyze, through a compared perspective, the role of anticommunist argument in the construction of the legitimacy of the last Brazilian civilmilitary dictatorship and Argentina penultimate. In Brazil, the period from 1964 to 1968 is focused on. In Argentina, the first two presidencies are relevant, from 1966 to 1971. In both cases, it was investigated the political affiliation and the criticism of the deposed presidents (João Goulart and Arturo Illia) and the official speeches that were intended to produce the consensus of the population towards the coup, the dictatorship and its actions. In addition to this, a periodic from each country has been chosen as case study to evaluate the possible impact of anticommunism and other legitimating arguments in the regional press: in the Brazilian case, it was chosen Zero Hora newspaper, from the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre; in the Argentinian case, it was analyzed the political speech of La Voz del Interior newspaper, from Cordoba province and headquartered in the capital of same name. The comparative analysis of the two observation fields, performed from the basic similarity – civil-military coups removing elected presidents in the sixties and in the context of the Cold War – walked through the complex relationship between similarities and differences. In the end, the specificities of each reality revealed itself with more intensity, showing, despite the initial interpretative parity and the presence of anticommunism in both speeches, their own path, mainly regarding the legitimating strategies. The two newspapers also revealed peculiar points of view, presenting different postures towards the authoritarian government.

<description>A jornada de Lope de Aguirre: evento, personagem, história
Schell, Deise Cristina
This dissertation researches how written records were produced regarding the history of a character and an event during the Spanish Conquest of the Americas. It is about the Journey of Omagua and Dorado [1560-1561], an expedition which traveled to unknown lands in America - in this case, the Amazon rainforest - searching for treasures and wealth. The Journey is known for the travelers' rebellious actions as well as for Lope de Aguirre, main character of the quest. We have tried to identify how this event and this character were represented and interpreted in diferent times in History through written records produced by many authors - from the conquerors, who were part of the expedition to historians from the 20th century. We intend to verify how the historiography on the Journey was built and, furthermore, how the memory of the event was established. Analyzing how the Journey's history was written will help us evaluate our work as historians by leading us to a reflection on historic knowledge produced through time.

<title>De cirurgião a comerciante de couros: a trajetória do licenciado Sebastião Gomes de Carvalho, o primeiro cirurgião do Continente de São Pedro</title>
<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/10678</link>
<description>De cirurgião a comerciante de couros: a trajetória do licenciado Sebastião Gomes de Carvalho, o primeiro cirurgião do Continente de São Pedro
Carvalho, Rogério Machado de
This dissertation deals with the trajectory of the graduate Sebastião Gomes de Carvalho, the first surgeon of Continente de São Pedro, a name given to the current state of Rio Grande do Sul in the 18th century. To reconstruct his trajectory, we present information about the training and functions that a surgeon in the 18th century should perform and about his environment, the political context and living conditions of the population who lived - or who began to live after the official settlement initiatives - in the region for which he was assigned in 1736, a year before the foundation of the Jesus Maria José fortress. Considering that the surgeon inserted himself in the local elite, through his work in commerce and politics, we identified and discussed, from the methodological frameworks of the topics covered, the social ascension strategies employed by Gomes de Carvalho, an individual who was not noble and who exercised – as an initial occupation – a trade that had no prestige and was poorly paid. Therefore, we analysed documents that are in the Proceedings of the Historical Archive of Rio Grande do Sul, baptismal records, correspondence and reports of travellers, comparing them with the reference bibliography on the themes contemplated in the dissertation. The research is part of the studies of Social History, in the dialogue with the Medicine, Health and Diseases History, to the extent that we seek, through the work of surgeon Gomes de Carvalho, to also characterise the health conditions and the arts of healing practised in the first half of the 18th century on the Continente de São Pedro.

<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/10305</link>
Nunes, Jefferson Aldemir
This dissertation has the focus on the Jesuit Roque Gonzáles de Santa Cruz, a Paraguayan missionary killed by Guarani indians in 1628, in Caaró, Rio Grande do Sul. His death was the beginning of a long process of canonization, which would take 360 years to be complete. This work seeks answers that expose the reason for this long period. The general objective is to analyze the process of institutionalization of the veneration of Roque Gonzáles de Santa Cruz in its various layers, relating it to the historiographical treatment, political environment and interest groups involved in his canonization. This will be done by analyzing the bibliography about him, and the 1932 beatification process, which had not been analyzed by previous authors. The methodology is centered on the discussion and use of operational concepts and debates such as holiness (Woodward, Cunningham, Matos, Gallick Piccone Camere); biography, trajectory and hagiography (Certeau, Loriga, Le Goff, Schmidt, Sobral, Bourdieu, Levi, Borja Gomes, Del Priore, Dosse, Karsburg); global community of martyrs (Cymbalista); the cause and process of beatification/canonization (Soares); and social construction of holiness (Soares). The work’s conclusions point to the complex relationship between the subjects who made an effort to close the beatification process. Furthermore, as the story of Gonzáles needs to be thought of in a broader way, from new perspectives that include the participation of social agents to form a support group that ensured that his canonization was completed.

Cardoso, Fabricio Safadi
This dissertation has as its object of investigation the intellectual and political trajectory of Duarte Paranhos Schutel. Through the reading of two of his main and most prominent literary works, namely, A Massambu (1861) and A República Vista do Meu Canto (1900), an effort was made to understand how both literary works incorporated the descriptive counterpart of his experiences that extend from the time of his youth to the time when, matured by political evenings and by his journalistic work in the biweekly A Regeneração, he wrote the República Vista do Meu Canto - a diary in which one reads about the recent Brazilian Republic and of its supervening installation. For the purpose of this research, we sought to choose it, in its first part, with the intention of discussing possible theoretical considerations about literary creations and what the historian's craft can take from them. However, the part that seconded the first inicide, with emphasis, on two literary works by Duarte Paranhos Schutel, one of which is A República Vista do Meu Canto.

Neves, Norton
The aim of this work is to understand the aspects of masculinity, honor and racialization within the interethnic conflicts between white and black people in Caxias do Sul, a city in the Northeastern region of Rio Grande do Sul that has been inhabited by Italian immigrants. With this thesis, my objective is to present a contribution to studies of the post-abolishment period, immigration and gender. The time frame considered for the research is from 1899 to 1910. The news articles of three different newspapers from Caxias do Sul have been used as a source of information for the analysis, in addition to criminal procedure documents from that period, all of which belong to the Comarca of Caxias do Sul. This study intends to verify issues that come as a result of the relations between Italian immigrants and black people in a region that is characterized by the European colonization during the nineteenth century. In order to do so, it was necessary to use a methodological process that originates from Microhistory. With the analysis of the texts, I could conclude that the interethnic relations were shaped by masculine rites that aimed to domain the spaces of socialization and work. In those spaces, was a defense of ethnic borders as well as the hegemonic masculinity of Italian immigrants.

In this study, we seek to identify and discuss the conceptions, diagnoses and treatments of tumors used in the region covered by the Jesuit Province of Paraguay in the transition from the 17th to the 18th century, a theme that has not yet been addressed in studies on medicine practiced in colonial America. To this end, we resorted to Jesuit documentation, with emphasis on the Carta Anua and treatises on medicine and surgery written by Jesuits, comparing them with the existing production on tumors in the same period. The lists of acquisitions of medicines, books and instruments by the Jesuit Order Attorneys will also be used in order to understand and evaluate the dynamics of supplying the high schools' apothecaries and the reductions maintained by the Society of Jesus. The lists of purchase of pharmacy items revealed the periodic supply of colleges and reductions, as well as the work of prosecutors and settlers/colonial agents, in addition to the formation of commercial networks. The research dialogues with references of the history of health and diseases, of medicine and of the history of sciences, taking into account the circulation and appropriation of knowledge and practices in modernity. Regarding the conceptions about tumors by the jesuits, it was found that they are perceived both as ills of the soul and as bodily diseases. The diagnoses, in turn, involve the description of characteristics of coloring, the absence or presence of pain, swelling or accumulation of moods, perceptible through touch, and their treatments are heterogeneous and influenced by both magical-religious practices and procedures. based on humoralism. Both Ânuas and Libro de Cirugía, an anonymous manuscript of surgery that still remains unpublished, point to the realization of experiments, the appropriation of local knowledge and the wide use of works by classical and period authors, revealing the hybrid character of the medicine practiced in the reductions of the Jesuit Province of Paraguay.

<title>Teatros verdes: o futebol na cidade e a cidade no futebol</title>
<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/10068</link>
<description>Teatros verdes: o futebol na cidade e a cidade no futebol
Silva, Fabrício Cardoso da
This dissertation analyzes through the images of the buildings of the Olympic Stadium (1954) and José Pinheiro Borda – Beira Rio Stadium (1969) alongside with the newspapers Jornal do Dia e Diário de Notícias how football participated in this construction of the city's image. The photographs used here are the most exposed by both collections of the clubs, as well as, the articles in the newspapers contribute to understand the plot that led to these architectural works. We will approach this theme through the conceptual look of John Bale (2003), English historian and geographer who developed the term sports landscape. This concept seeks to understand the spaces that are found around the stadiums and that are pieces that participate in the sporting moment itself. Thus, we can approach the city of Porto Alegre and its urban transformations, in the 1950s and 1960s, a period of urban growth that would provide the image that the city has nowadays. Between social disputes, urban housing and political power, football stadiums intertwine with the urban dynamics of the city, building their own imaginary and forever changing the face of the city. Integrating with the layout of the city, the passion for football motivated two architectural works of great scope, modifying the spaces of the city, either in the removal of a village in the case of Grêmio or in the alteration of an environmental landscape, as in the case of Internacional. Thus, the city and its imagery are related to the advent of stadiums and provoke a look at the city of football and its green theaters.

<description>"Para abrigar menores": o Patronato/Aprendizado Agrícola Visconde de São Leopoldo e a assistência à infância (São Leopoldo/RS - 1944-1960)
Pereira, Maurício
In ―To shelter minors‖: the Patronato / Aprendizado Agrícola Visconde de São Leopoldo and childcare (São Leopoldo / RS - 1944-1960), our objective is to analyze the performance of the Patronage (1944-1949) and the Apprenticeship Visconde de São Leopoldo (1950-1960) in childcare in the region in the defined period, with an emphasis on the discussion of minors served by the institution (profile and family reality in which they were inserted), seeking to verify whether there were permanences and / or transformations from the change from patronage to apprenticeship. Inserted in the debates on the Social History of Childhood, this research makes use of sources located in the institution's own archive (currently CEEPRO Visconde de São Leopoldo), such as the Employer's School Enrollment Book, social reports, individual forms and crafts, in addition to other documents. From the historiographic debate carried out and the analysis undertaken, it is possible to notice that the institution received, in its majority, boys who were not familiar with life and work in the field, so that both the Employers and the Agricultural Apprenticeship of São Leopoldo they ended up serving mainly the task of assisting poor minors, coming from families with few financial resources and, mostly, linked to the urban context.

Saval, Priscila Ervin
This dissertation is anchored in the field of the History of Food. In it, we aim to understand how food presented itself in two different moments in the history of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) (formation and implementation). Considering the period (space/time) that begins in Brazil in 1934 and ends in Italian territory in 1945. The sources we use are from different typologies (Food surveys; decree-laws; Constitutional Letters; chronicles, photographs, and oral reports) those were undergone to a methodological effort guided by the exercise of interdisciplinarity (PETERSEN, 2009) and the “Patchwork” method developed by Alessandro Portelli (1996) for Oral History. The interdisciplinarity also made it possible for us to reuse memorialistic sources as methodology (RODEGHERO; MACHADO, 2017). Agreements signed between the Brazilian and American governments marked the history of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. Two countries with very different realities, situation highlighted by the food and the feeding. The troop formation process suffered problems due to the Brazilian population's food insecurity. Brazil's inexperience in war events coupled with the neglect of the Brazilian Army with the food it provided to its troops, resulted in difficulties for the military who were sent to World War II. Not only they failed to offer them safe or nutritionally adequate food, but also it lacked identity and cultural values. The FEB military period in the war was branded by feelings of homesickness, family members and Brazilian food nostalgia, that brought about prescribed memories (WORTMAN, 2016), providing a well-being feeling. Sensitivities (PESAVENTO, 2005) also marked the memories that Italian expeditionary and civilians built about the relationships they established during the war. Therefore, the “voice of the food” (AMON, 2014) emanated from the memorial reports and from the other sources used, ended up stating the presence of different perspectives of food during the process of formation and implementation of FEB in WWII.

Rocha, Bruna Amanda Godinho
This study investigates female representation in American superhero comics, analyzing the trajectory of the character Carol Danvers - as Ms. and Captain Marvel. To support this research, I used studies about the feminist movement, its impacts on society, with emphasis on some women. Also, it was necessary to undertake a discussion of the concept of cultural industry - as the comics are in this production logic, to establish, critically, the dialogue between the feminist movement, the comics universe, and the cultural industry. In general, since the emergence of contemporary comics, social, political, and cultural aspects have been debated within them. However, since the 60's, due to the growing academic interest is that they became analyzed as artistic expression, with critical possibilities, maintenance, or subversion of the models traditionally produced and established. The proposal is to study the changes that Carol Danvers has throughout her journey and reflect on how they connect to the feminist movement. We eager to contribute and expand the discussion of the cultural industry impact on the dynamics and struggles of society.

Nowadays known as a popular sport, soccer is both a game, leisure, entretainment and a place where political, economic and social disputes occur. Englishsport or football appears in Rio Grande do Sul in the historical context of the beginning of the 20th century, in which associative clubs are consolidating. This is the setting for the formation of the first football clubs in the state and the presence of immigrants in their foundations is a key element. From this fact, the ethnic attribution derives from the origins of football clubs, as in the case of Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, attributed to german origin, and Esporte Clube Juventude, to Italian origin. In this research, we intend to understand which elements, besides the last name of the partners, can atribute an ethnicity. For this purpose, we opted for the chronological cut of the first three years of the two associations – that is, from 1903 to 1906 for Grêmio and from 1913 to 1916 for Juventude – in order to understand the ethnic matter at the beginning of their sport and social activies. We used the analysis of the institutional minutes of both institutions and reports from the newspapers A Federação, Cittá di Caxias and O Brazil. After this survey, we tried to draw parallels and/or identify differences between the two clubs in an attempt to understand whether this ethnicity was an idea expressed by the clubs and/or their members or if it was imputed to them. Through the lens of Cultural History, we observed a new way of analyzing the history of football, understanding this theme as a means of understanding the social dynamics that is reflected in the institutions.

Between 1968 and 1974, some Brazilians, outraged by the Civil-military Dictatorship and&#13;
believers of the revolutionary ideal - inspired, among others, by the Cuban Revolution –&#13;
decided that the only way to effect the necessary changes for Brazil was through weapons. In a short space of time, however, the armed struggle was crushed by the organs of repression. Since the end of the 1980s, there has been a profusion of works on the Left-Wing that worked in the country, the armed left-wing did not stay away. Our general objectives, with our study, were two: to carry out a bibliographic survey on the studies that had as object a specific armed organization, that were concerned with the different trajectories of the different armed organizations; the second objective was to analyze the memories – through interviews conducted by Marcelo Ridenti - of the revolutionary militants. For the second objective, we use the diverse contributions of the authors who dedicated themselves to Oral History (Alessandro Portelli and Luísa Passerini) and / or to studies on memory (Hallbawcs, Fentress and Wickham, Ricouer, Nora, among others). When working with interviews that have been in existence for thirty years, we asked ourselves and we wanted to raise issues related to issues such as: Gender; Left-Wing Melancholia; the role of resistance that armed struggle&#13;
organizations would have developed and, also, the problem of suicide – remembering that&#13;
this issue was “inaugurated” by an armed struggle activist, Renato Tapajós. With our first&#13;
objective, we seek to show which organizations that participated in armed actions have not yet been explored, thus, the gaps in our historiography. In working with oral sources, we look for evidence such as the memories of the armed left, contrary to what is usually thought, it is much more diverse and dissonant than univocal.

<title>“Ardorosa maragata”: a atuação política de Ana Aurora do Amaral Lisboa em Rio Pardo - RS (1890-1920)</title>

<description>“Ardorosa maragata”: a atuação política de Ana Aurora do Amaral Lisboa em Rio Pardo - RS (1890-1920)
Finger, Eduardo
Ana Aurora do Amaral Lisboa (1860-1951) was a teacher, writer from Rio&#13;
Grande do Sul and political activist. Born in Rio Pardo, Ana Aurora experienced&#13;
important chapters of Brazilian history in the late 19th century and the first half of the&#13;
20th century. This research seeks to understand the political trajectory of this teacher&#13;
and writer from Rio-Pardense, a notorious supporter of the Liberal Party and the&#13;
Federalist Party of Rio Grande do Sul. We work with a diverse set of historical&#13;
sources, such as (auto) biographical reports, correspondence, newspapers, criminal&#13;
proceedings and inventory. Analyzing the socioeconomic profile of his family, it was&#13;
possible to observe that the Amaral Lisboa were from a modest family. It is&#13;
concluded that Ana Aurora's itinerary in the “world of letters”, as a teacher and writer,&#13;
was leveraged by the social influence of her family. In the midst of the civil war of the&#13;
Federalist Revolution (1893-1895), we understand an event that guided Ana Aurora's&#13;
political life. In an action aimed at repairing individual and family honor, Ana Aurora&#13;
gained notoriety in regional politics and, later, in historiography, for the skirmish with&#13;
Antero Fontoura (political opponent), generating the opening of a criminal process&#13;
and a series of media confrontations between both. Using writing as a resource, as a&#13;
way to defend and participate in the civil conflict in the state, this biographical event&#13;
was marked in memory about Ana Aurora and leveraged her career as a political&#13;
columnist and "honorary member" of the federalists. Ana Aurora's performance in&#13;
newspapers such as A Reforma and Gaspar Martins increased her reputation as an&#13;
outstanding maragata, a performance marked by tension and strategies, being a&#13;
woman who focused on political issues in mostly male public spaces.

<title>Petróleo e desenvolvimento em múltiplas temporalidades: Vargas, Cardoso e Lula</title>
<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/9526</link>
<description>Petróleo e desenvolvimento em múltiplas temporalidades: Vargas, Cardoso e Lula
Ferreira, Gabriel da Silva
The present work aims to analyze the policies for oil in times of the governments&#13;
of Getúlio Vargas (1951-1954), Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-1998) and Luiz&#13;
Inácio Lula da Silva (2006-2010), moments in which established milestones in the&#13;
history of the sector: the creation of Petrobras (1953), the Petroleum Law (1997) and&#13;
the confirmation of the discovery of the pre-salt layer (2007). The starting point,&#13;
however, is the expectations created and the impacts caused by the last fact and how&#13;
the past alluding to the first appears in the speeches and in taking governmental&#13;
measures. Until then, the Lula government administered policies for the oil sector&#13;
inherited from the government that preceded it, from Fernando Henrique Cardoso&#13;
(1995-2002), in turn, changed after the publication of the Petroleum Law in 1997. This&#13;
Law defined by the opening of the capital of the state-owned oil company, Petrobras,&#13;
and the state monopoly of exploration and production of oil and gas by the state&#13;
company was extinguished, allowing the concession of exploration blocks to the&#13;
private sector, a practice maintained during part of the Lula's government and&#13;
suspended after the important discovery already mentioned. In carrying out this&#13;
analysis, the discussion about two concepts is considered: developmentalism and&#13;
neodevelopmentism, which contributes to the investigation of possible approximations&#13;
and distances between Vargas, Cardoso and Lula. Regarding the research sources,&#13;
speeches and official data, memories and bibliographic review were used.

<title>“Os brancos não falam a verdade contra mim. Porque ele é homem e não havia de passar o trabalho que as fêmeas passam”: Maria Rita e a interseccionalidade na experiência de mulheres escravizadas (Comarca de Rio Pardo, século XIX)</title>

<description>“Os brancos não falam a verdade contra mim. Porque ele é homem e não havia de passar o trabalho que as fêmeas passam”: Maria Rita e a interseccionalidade na experiência de mulheres escravizadas (Comarca de Rio Pardo, século XIX)
Santos, Bruna Letícia de Oliveira dos
The writing of this dissertation had the drive to question how gender is socially built for&#13;
black women and how it was lived by these same women in History. We search to construct answers from analysis of criminal processes that involved enslaved black women at the county of Rio Pardo, state of Rio Grande do Sul, during the XIXth century through the relationship between gender, race, and judicial condition of enslaved women. In the gathering of sources and in the process of structuration of the research, the experience of Maria Rita - a black minanagô who lived her motherhood as a black woman under the judicial status of slavery – became the main focus of our historical inquiry. Maria Rita presented us with the intersections of the place that a woman had in that slave society. For many times, she was the mediator between two worlds, the enslaved and the one that did not recognize the impositions of slavery because of her African origin. Still, intersectionality was the key element across this study and was used in the analysis through different perspectives. Initially, we used it as a methodological tool to think about black women in historiographical researches. In this sense, the intersection between gender, race, and judicial condition has presented black women as an analytical category in the gender studies about slavery. Yet, with the focus of analysis in women, we perceive intersectionality as a living experience in a History bounded by the structure of slavery&#13;
domination that exploited black women as enslaved workers that were constituted by the&#13;
racialization of gender as the intersectional cornerstone of the system. And, by the movement and actions of women in the sense of preservation, the recreating and continuity of the humankind.

<title>Memórias imigrantistas: Abrantes, Pérez Rosales e seus escritos – Brasil e Chile – século XIX</title>

<description>Memórias imigrantistas: Abrantes, Pérez Rosales e seus escritos – Brasil e Chile – século XIX
Blume, Welington Augusto
This dissertation analyzes comparatively the works Memoria sobre os meios de promover a colonisação (1846) e Memoria sobre emigracion, inmigracion i colonizacion (1854) written respectively by the Brazilian politician Visconde de Abrantes and the Chilean politician Vicente Pérez Rosales. The works were written in a close period: the first one, in the year of 1846, and the second one, in the year of 1854. Both focus on immigration and colonization and they are inserted in a context where the great immigrations started to occur. In the middle of the XIX century, Brazil and Chile centered their economic and social policies on the colonization of vacant land for foreign immigrants. However, this period is marked by uncertainties. Brazil and Chile’s images were depreciated in Europe. There were uncertainties by Europeans regarding the weather, laws, employment, citizenship, and the social insertion of immigrants. Based on that, I analyze, initially, the context in which Abrantes and Pérez Rosales were inserted. I establish a dialogue with historiography in order to localize temporally the characters, aiming to understand the political, social, and economic questions that were central to the period. Supporting the considerations on different theoretical and methodological research fields, I reflect about the trajectories of Abrantes and Pérez Rosales understanding that the history of memórias is also the history of their authors. From this working stage on, I localize the context in which memórias was produced. Why did they write their memórias? What can these characters reveal about the immigration and colonization projects occurred in Brazil and Chile in the second half of the eight hundreds? Afterwards, I interpret their ideas based on the initial objectives, demonstrating how they wrote and structured their arguments on immigration and colonization. Based on that, I analyze how the works are aligned to the immigrant discourses of that time and I interpret the radicalized notions that are part of the text. Furthermore, I present the proposals of the authors and I elucidate how they appropriate the ideas of immigration and colonization current in the United States at the time. The research on memórias of Abrantes and Pérez Rosales enabled the comprehension of the cultural background of the writers, their relation with politics, the circulation of ideas worldwide and their perceptions of immigration and colonization in Brazil and Chile.

This work intends to analyze the trajectory of the Baptista da Silva family, a black family that reached a social prestige in Porto Alegre, during the first decades of the 20th century. We will seek to present the mechanisms and sociability strategies that enabled the Baptista da Silva family to be inserted and socially affirmed, where we highlight the incursion into religious brotherhoods, a family project around education and work, as one of the main forms of social mobility. This research is structured by a considerable number of documentary sources, among which stand out the journals A Federação and O Exemplo, the latter, points out the connections of family members with the black press of Rio Grande do Sul and black protagonism that they developed from the press. In addition to problematizing the importance of the structured family as an important contribution to the construction of sociability networks in the post-abolition period, we intend to investigate the dynamics that involved the formation of this family nucleus, thus referring to a temporal setback for thinking about the family during the period of slavery. and the existing connections with the stately family. In addition, we will also count on the contribution of one of the descendants of the family, who through the memories and the family collection that keeps safeguarded, we will seek to print possibilities and questions about the paths taken by this family, in order to complexify the trajectory of its members. Thus, the study proposed here, contributes to research on black families in the period of slavery and the post-abolition period, highlighting family relationships, sociability networks, black protagonism and memory relationships, as reading keys to dimension black social experiences.

Kleinkauf, Renan Willam
The present dissertation with a focus on studying the academic trajectory of Priest Arthur Rabuske, S. J.. During his time in the academic world, Rabuske, S. J.produced books and articles of his own authorship and translated several texts by other Jesuit historians and chroniclers. His vast textual production allows us to take a close look at his works, especially his dedication to Jesuit historiography. Through empirical research and the vast production of books and texts by this Jesuit, it is possible to understand part of the history of immigration and the Society of Jesus in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. As a historian-researcher, his “doing historiography” allows us to analyze the performance of the priests and brothers of the Companhia de Jesus of Germanic culture, first in the German Vice-Province in Brazil, then in the Province of Southern Brazil. Focusing him as a researcher and historian, it becomes possible to trace his life trajectory, with an emphasis on academic bias. We seek to analyze him as a researcher and member of the Companhia de Jesus, highlighting his important contribution to the academic world and to the Rio Grande do Sul and Jesuit historiography.

<title>Requerimentos e concessões fundiárias: experiências sociais de apropriação do solo urbano (Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, século XIX)</title>
<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/9410</link>
<description>Requerimentos e concessões fundiárias: experiências sociais de apropriação do solo urbano (Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, século XIX)
Becker Neto, Octávio
The present research aims to identify how social relations influenced the urban space conformation of Vila de Santa Maria da Boca do Monte, in the Province of Rio Grande do Sul, in the second half of the 19th century, until mid-1870s. Through the City Council’s minutes, more specifically the land requisitions registered in this documentation, it is sought to locate individuals acting in the context of urban land distribution. The acknowledgment of a significant German social contingent asking for and receiving land highlights an ethnic issue, which is observed first from the City Council perspective, and then from the Germans themselves. The concessions made by the local legislature and the consequent clash with the Province lead to a discussion about 19th century Brazilian land law, from which it is sought to understand the position of two different public power instances about urban land. In this sense, it is established a dialogue with broader themes, of regional and national impact, such as the insertion and integration of German immigrants in the 19th century, and the Brazilian land restructuring after the Lei de Terras law, from 1850. Methodologically, this work is inspired by Italian social microhistory, privileging the observation of behaviors and social relationships given in a circumscribed space. The sources used, especially the City Council’s minutes, postmortem inventories and matrimonial records, point at ethnic and parental background criteria that support and condition such relationships and behaviors. By the exam of these performances and practices developed by the agents in the context of land appropriation, it becomes evident the influence of the articulation of a collectivity on Santa Maria’s urban space conformation and occupation.

<link>http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/9302</link>
This paper, entitled A History of Syphilis in Manaus: Prostitution, Control and Treatment (1922-1934), aims to analyze the fight against venereal diseases in Manaus, Amazonas, at the beginning of the twentieth century, mainly from the action of the Sanitation and Rural Prophylaxis Service of the State of Amazonas - SSPREAm. In particular, we will focus on combating syphilis in its relation to prostitution by investigating the medical discourse on the disease and their view of the link between prostitution and syphilis, as well as the proposed forms of control and treatment. The sources used were mainly medical reports from Doctor Samuel Uchôa, director of SSPREAm and the Book of Hygienic Inspection of the Merit in the State of Amazonas. The usage of these sources has convinced us of the role of this doctor, whose performance was fundamental in the question of perceptions and treatments for venereal diseases in Manaus. The analysis of the Book of Inspection of Harmfulness, maintained by SSPREAm, also made it possible to understand the social experiences of prostitution in Manaus and to discuss issues related to the sexuality and health of women involved in this activity in the city of Manaus during this period. The research therefore fits into the themes of the History of Public Health and the Sociocultural History of Disease.
