As in every war, acts of violence and barbarismo have been perpetrated, including atrocities committed against Chinese and Korean women. The objective of this work is to broaden the understanding of the so-called “comfort women” and to investigate how forced labor stations emerged during this period. The research will be conducted through the analysis of articles and academic texts on the subject. Throughout the work, we will address the context of the Sino-Japanese Wars, the Nanjing massacre and the emergence of comfort nets, highlighting their real purpose and the atrocities committed against East Asian women. Personal accounts of victims who suffered torture, rape and various other types of violence will also be presented. Finally, the positions of the countries involved on acts of sexual violence against women will be analyzed, as well as the consequences of the acts of sexual violence that were imposed on women and their effects to this day. The magazine was launched in May 1928 in the capital of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, under the direction of important figures in the health scene, such as Ulysses de Nonohay. The publication aimed to provide readers with education focused on basic health care and hygiene, covering topics such as childhood health, motherhood and disease treatment, thus contributing to medical practices of the period. In dialogue with the history of health and the social history of childhood, this work will discuss, through historiography, the concerns of doctors and government officials with child health in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul in the early 1930s. , will present the Hygia Magazine, exploring general aspects of its construction and particularities of its publications. The development of racial discrimination against yellow people, in this study, of Chinese and Japanese ethnicity, went through scientific, intellectual and political discussions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Therefore, the writing of this research was mobilized by the question of how race is socially constructed for Chinese and Japanese and how the discourse around these agents was constructed in history. For this reason, we analyze racial theories, conceived by European ideologists, that were reconfigured in light of the national reality, and which justified proposals and implementations of eugenic measures against the population. Una estadía entre los indios Mocobíes 1749-1767. La obra fue escrita durante su exilio, tras la expulsión de dos jesuitas de América en 1767, y cuenta con varias ediciones; para esta ocasión analizamos las ediciones de 1944 y 2010. La forma de escribir la historia y la experiencia vivida estuvo marcada por la necesidad de validar la labor misionera a través de la práctica de la escritura propia de la Compañía de Jesús, en el contexto de la Disputa por Nuevo Mundo, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. En este sentido, primero, insertamos el manuscrito en su contexto de producción, para, luego analizar sus percepciones sobre la naturaleza, así como los usos de la misma que pudieron ser fielmente retratados por el jesuita. Experience in the advertising market, management in companies of different sizes, and work as a national and international consultant have shaped my professional path. However, growing restlessness led me to seek a more humanistic and sustainable approach, and I found in Public History - which extends beyond academic boundaries, impacting society in various ways - this anchoring. The decision to study History was not by chance. It arose from the need to theoretically ground the new worldview and professional choice, especially regarding the relationships between history, memory, and historiography. Awareness of more sustainable management practices, such as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), along with the growing demand of new generations for life purposes and conscious consumption, motivated the adherence to humanism and corporate sustainability. One of the consultancy projects, “Bahia Viaja na Bahia”, which sees Public History as the bridge to this new management path, propels this monograph. This work aims to contribute to expanding discussions on the application of Public History in new contexts, laying the foundations for more inclusive, ethical, and socially responsible projects. Using the interned woman's name as the guiding thread of the research, her criminal case file was located in the Public Archive of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (APERS). The young woman, a minor, of mixed race, and a cook on a farm in the city of São Gabriel, is accused of committing infanticide. By cross-referencing sources between her criminal case and a medical record, this work aims to reveal how legal and psychiatric discourses shaped the judgment of the defendant. It also seeks to understand how this process helps us comprehend the constructions of gender, class, race, motherhood, femininity, and madness in Rio Grande do Sul during the First Republic. Through the analysis of the case, we conclude that legal and medical knowledge positioned women as biologically more susceptible to mental instability. These spaces of internment for the insane and criminals, especially women deviating from expected feminine behavior, served as places for the reeducation of young women. The study uses a specific criminal case from 1929 involving Anna Frank, a German midwife, and Guilherme Scheidt, a German doctor accused of professional incompetence. The overall objective of the study is to understand how these German midwives operated in a small town in Rio Grande do Sul in the first decades of the 20th century. To this end, the study sets several specific objectives, which include identifying the professional performance of immigrant midwives, as well as elements of competitiveness and solidarity. It is also relevant to examine the relationship between midwives and doctors, in a context of increasing medicalization of childbirth in cities like Santa Maria and the capital Porto Alegre. The work is contextualized in a scenario of social and professional transformations, with pressures from the press and the health system to medicalize the midwives' craft. We will present the dynamics and developments of Paco's trajectory in an area occupied by Italian immigrants and the political connections in which this character was involved. To achieve this, we will apply Eric Hobsbawm's concept of "social bandit" and draw on bibliographic sources addressing Italian immigration and banditry in Brazil, as well as newspaper articles that sought to reconstruct the different images attributed to the subject. Our methodology draws inspiration from micro-history to recover parts of Paco's trajectory, using his name as a guide to navigate the various contexts in which the character was involved. In conclusion, we believe that Paco's trajectory was closely linked to the power structure of the Rio Grande do Sul Republican Party during the República Velha, using political maneuvering to gain benefits and, simultaneously, being used by the powerful to maintain the PRR in control of the state. Picada Café city, in Rio Grande do Sul, has the footwear industry as its main economic activity, being one of the largest shoes producing centers in the state. From the 1950s onwards, the process of industrialization and internalization of the sector took place, with the implementation of modern production techniques, aimed at increasing productivity and improving the relationship between employee and company. These transformations resulted in a significant population growth, resulting from a long process of migration and decentralization of productive units. Therefore, a new type of worker emerges, the worker-colonist, who appears as a new form of job recruitment in these peri urban areas, and therefore becomes the main subject of this investigation. To carry out this research, was analyze several historiographical sources that will help us understand the footwear industry evolution in Rio Grande do Sul and its microregions, allowing us to figure out the constitution of the market and the workforce in this sector, exploring the sociological and economic issues that were decisive for its formation and dictated this activity today. Oral history was used and will bring us more information on the issue of labor force of the settler worker. Dra. Maíra Vendrame, who is also the advisor of this work. This research is dedicated to the study of the medical records of women interned at São Pedro Hospice, with attention to Italian immigrants and descendants, mainly during the First Republic period. The female figure is adjusted to the image of a good wife and mother. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, these conceptions asserted themselves and helped to compose medicals diagnoses, placing many women, who had mood swings, natural to the female organism, or who refused to have children, as “crazy”. Thus, we will seek to analyze what were the main reasons that made women have this rupture with their ethnic and family group. The sources used will be the medical records of São Pedro Hospice and the criminal case of the Italian Ângela A., which is in APERS. The methodology used will be a quantitative analysis of these records, as well as we will pay attention to a record of the Italian Ângela and the criminal process in which she became a defendant. In addition, it also seeks to discuss the process of development of modern nursing in Brazil, from the 1920s onwards, with emphasis on Anna Nery School of Nursing (EEAN) (Rio de Janeiro) and to analyze the trajectories of brazilian nurses Edith Magalhães Fraenkel and Laís Moura Netto dos Reys, outstanding characters in the field of nursing in the country in the first half of the 20th century. This study is qualitative research with a socio-historical approach and, for its development, were used sources such as the documentation produced by the Rockefeller Foundation (RF), as the Fellowship Cards of the aforementioned nurses, as well as pertinent bibliographies, such as articles, biographies, books, dissertations, and theses. The process of feminization of nursing began at the beginning of the 20th century and, since its inception, the belief that care, kindness, and abnegation were inherent aspects of the female figure accompanied its development. The understanding that women had their characteristics for domestic work and family care were the supporting pillars for nursing, for a long time, to be conceived as an extension of such feminine obligations. Despite the stigmas of the profession, it is undeniable that nursing meant autonomy and the possibility of women entering the labor market, given that the area presented itself as an occupation of respect, a symbol of devotion and maintenance of society's well-being. From the historiographical perspective, it will be possible to offer contributions to the development of studies focused on both the History of Nursing and nurses, from the dialogue with gender studies, boosting the advancement of research, as well as enriching debates, questions, and reflections within the historiographical field. Fri, 18 Jun 2021 00:00:00 GMT http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/11950 2021-06-18T00:00:00Z http://repositorio.jesuita.org.br/handle/UNISINOS/11949 As lentes do império: a descoberta de Machu Picchu e sua cobertura pela revista National Geographic Colombo, Micaela Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar el hecho conocido como el descubrimiento de Machu Picchu en 1911 con especial atención a las fotografías publicadas por la revista National Geographic en el número de abril de 1913, cuando Hiram Bingham informó del descubrimiento del asentamiento inca de Machu Picchu, en Perú. A partir de la discusión sobre la construcción del discurso que se constituyó sobre Machu Picchu como ciudad perdida, buscamos relacionar la forma en que estas fotografías transmitían una imagen negativa de América Latina. Desde el siglo XIX, Estados Unidos produjo y difundió imágenes peyorativas del continente latinoamericano, relacionándolo con la pobreza, el desorden y la indolencia. Así, la revista funcionó como un vector que propagó, a partir de las fotografías presentes en sus reportajes fotográficos, imágenes de América Latina que reforzaban este estereotipo. Para este trabajo se analizaron 9 fotografías que presentan elementos que fueron observados por los exploradores de la revista National Geographic: naturaleza, gente, clima y las ruinas de Machu Picchu. A partir del análisis de estas imágenes, nos dimos cuenta de que a la revista le interesaba representar al continente latinoamericano como atrasado y pobre, fuera de sintonía con Estados Unidos, nación en claro proceso de expansión y desarrollo socioeconómico. Este interés estuvo íntimamente ligado al modelo político adoptado por el país a principios del siglo XX, cuando comenzó a inmiscuirse en la política de los países vecinos. Responding to the call to arms of the Kingdom of Italy, many of their subjects from overseas presented themselves as volunteers to fight on the front for the motherland. To understand the experiences of these Italian-Brazilian fighters and their motivations for participating in the war in Italy, we used newspaper reports, letters and a commemorative book as sources. We seek to understand the reasons why groups of volunteers were formed on this side of the Atlantic, young men who left for Europe knowing that they might not return from the battlefields. Patriotism, militarism, nationalism, romantic views of war is what seemed to foster the ideas of these men who agreed to cross the ocean to defend Italy. Where they fought and how they participated in the war in Europe are questions that we intend to answer with this work. The local for study will be the rural communities formed by German and Italian immigrants in Rio Grande do Sul, in the decades of the First Republic. Based on the analysis of the first Republican Penal Code, we understand it necessary to think about the action of justice in rural areas, in view of the republican disciplinary project. This project was concerned with the development and control of the population, especially women whose role as wife and mother was a key part of this new order. For this, 108 cases were consulted, and 19 cases were analyzed in which women are listed as victims and defendants of the District of São Sebastião do Caí / RS, found in the Public Archive of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, located in Porto Alegre / RS. In that Archive, there is a large part of the documentation from the judiciary of Rio Grande do Sul. Analyzing the cases, we concluded that, in rural immigrant regions, there were different uses of justice, depending on the nature of the crime and the network of relationships of those involved.
